I’m just curious, starting at $50,000 what exactly makes the Touareg the smart buy? I want to know because I feel like these are a great used car deal due to immediate the $12k discount, but I have no clue what the brand new ones offer that’s unique or why a VW SUV above this starting price would help much.

When someone likes VW as a brand and needs a big SUV. When someone drives one and likes it more than other vehicles. Take your pick. Why do people buy any vehicle?

I can’t see a world where I’d recommend a new Touareg. Maybe if you’re a high-up at Volkswagen? But then you’re still driving a watered-down Porsche. I don’t know, it’s a stupid car.

Used might be a different story. I don’t know how these keep their value, but I imagine it’s pretty poor. A touareg for $30k is probably fair.

Here’s a 2012 with 91k kilometres for under $30k CAD.

So true! I wonder what the Touareg offers that other vehicles in its segment do not? There must be something special for the offering to exist and be consistantly increasing in base price.

Well, in the US they sold over 7000 last year , so clearly there’s something.

I think 7,000 is pretty horrific sales. VW has about 650 dealerships in the US. That’s not even an average of one large SUV sale a month across the combined dealerships. But Americans don’t really buy luxury cars or SUVs and 2015 was a slow auto sales year.

That’s alright. Nice that it’s CPO. Even still, I’d probably go for  this Volvo for $5,000 less.

People who’ve moved up the Volkswagem brand, but don’t feel the need for moving up to an Audi. Usually, more laid back people who care less about flaunting the brand of their car.

Kinda like what the Land Cruiser is to Lexus.

You’d think they would have learned the lesson about stepping away from their demographic after they made the Phaeton.

The BRZ only sold 5300 last year. The Land Cruiser sold under 2700 (the LX sold under 3900 cars, too). Yet both are still being sold. Bad sales are all relative. If VW can keep selling the Touareg and turn a profit with it, keep it on sale. Makes sense to me.

That’s true, I mean Maserati sold nearly 5,000 Ghiblis last year out of 11,700 sales. I guess those numbers are plenty to bank roll an entire brand. That’s pretty neat.

How about this then? We had one as a company car, and it was the last car anyone wanted to drive. They’re junk.

Does the new one come with a TDI V10? No. Case closed. I’ll take a used one.

1st gen V8 aren’t so bad, either. Just ask anyone other than Doug E. DeMuro.
